Why Most People Fail to Understand the Bhagavad Gita?

Have you ever tried reading the Bhagavad Gita but felt confused? Did some verses feel too deep or difficult to relate to? Or maybe you wondered, “everyone praises the Gita, but why can’t I fully understand it?”

If yes, you are not alone. Many people start with enthusiasm—but somewhere in between:

✔ The language feels heavy

✔ The meaning feels confusing

✔ The connection feels missing

And slowly, the book that once inspired curiosity…ends up sitting on the shelf. Now imagine someone gives you a medical book and says, "Read this and cure yourself." You might read the words…but will you truly understand what to do? Probably not. You would need a doctor to guide you, explain things simply, and help you apply them.

In the same way, the Bhagavad Gita is like a manual for life—but without guidance, it can feel overwhelming instead of enlightening. We try to understand it through google or watch random videos on random shlokas, which makes it even more confusing as everyone seems to say something different. Arjuna on the battlefield was also confused, overwhelmed, and emotionally broken. But instead of guessing or assuming, he turned to Lord Krishna and said:

I am Your disciple, please guide me.” (BG 2.7) that one step changed everything.

Let’s explore the common reasons – and how we can overcome them.

1. Why Guru Parampara Is the Key to Understanding Bhagavad Gita?

Today, there are countless editions and commentaries of the Bhagavad Gita available. Almost every scholar, philosopher or thinker has presented their own interpretation. But this creates a serious question – If everyone is interpreting it differently, then what is the original message of the Gita? Hence Bhagavad Gita As It is by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada stands out as the authentic because It represents the teachings of Lord Krishna without alteration.

In BG 4.2, Lord Krishna clearly explains that this knowledge is received through a chain of realized teachers: “Evam parampara-pratam imam rajarsayo viduh,,” – This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession. When this chain is broken, the true meaning gets lost.

A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is the authentic bona fide spiritual master as he stands firmly in the unbroken guru parampara (disciplic succession) that originates from Lord Krishna Himself.

This knowledge was first spoken by Lord Krishna and then carefully passed down through realized spiritual masters without change. Srila Prabhupada received this same knowledge from his spiritual master and presented it exactly as it is, without adding his own opinions or interpretations.

Just like we carefully choose a recognized and authorized university for our education, the same principle applies to spiritual learning. When it comes to understanding the Bhagavad Gita, we cannot rely on just any interpretation. Spiritual knowledge is even more subtle and important than material education. Therefore, it must come from an authentic and recognized source and 'Bhagavad Gita As It Is by Srila Prabhupada' is the most authentic book guiding millions of people across the globe.

2. Are You Reading the Bhagavad Gita with the Right Mindset?

Understanding the Bhagavad Gita is not just about how much we read, but how we read. Two people can read the same verse, one may feel deeply transformed, while the other feels nothing at all. The difference lies not in the text, but in the spirit with which it is approached. The Gita, however, is not meant to fit into our mindset, it is meant to elevate it. The wisdom spoken by Lord Krishna is not hidden, it is revealed according to our sincerity. The more we approach with a genuine heart, the more the teachings begin to open up naturally.

Now with sincerity one more important aspect is the spirit of devotion. One should not think that he is equal to Krishna, nor should he think that Krishna is an ordinary personality or even a very great personality. Lord Sri Krishna is the supreme Personality of Godhead, we should accept this fact and with that submissive spirit we should try to understand Bhagavad Gita. Unless one reads the Bhagavad Gita in a submissive spirit, it is very difficult to understand it as it is a great mystery.

3. Why Proper Guidance is important to Understand the Bhagavad Gita?

People fail to understand the Bhagavad Gita as they try to approach it independently – relying only on their own intellect.

The Gita is not an ordinary book. It is a divine conversation between Lord Krishna and Arjuna, spoken in a moment of deep confusion and surrender at the battle field. It’s depth requires understanding through proper Guidance.

In the purport of (BG 8.28) Srila Prabhupada explains that one should try to understand Gita not by scholarship or mental speculation but by hearing them in association with devotees. One who has a little faith in Bhagavad Gita should learn Bhagavad Gita from a devotee, because in the beginning of the Fourth Chapter it is stated clearly that Bhagavad Gita can be understood only by devotees; no one else can perfectly understand the purpose of Bhagavad Gita. One should therefore learn Gita from a devotee of Krishna, not from mental speculators. This is a sign of faith. When one searches for a devotee and fortunately gets a devotee’s association one actually begins to study and understand Bhagavad Gita.

To support sincere seekers in understanding the Bhagavad Gita in the right way, our temple also offers a Gita Life Course (GLC) conducted under proper guidance. This course is designed to help participants study the Gita systematically, following the teachings as they come through the authentic guru parampara.

In this course, each verse is explained in a simple and relatable manner, along with its deeper meaning and practical application. It provides a valuable opportunity to learn, reflect, and clarify doubts in a guided environment, making the journey of understanding the Bhagavad Gita much more clear and enriching.

4. Why Inconsistent Reading Stops Spiritual Progress?

Many of us approach the Bhagavad Gita not with discipline, but with mood. We read when we feel inspired, and pause when life feels busy—assuming that spiritual growth will happen in between our conveniences. But the truth is, inconsistency does not just pause our progress, it slowly disconnects us. The wisdom of the Gita is not something that reveals itself in occasional glimpses; it unfolds gradually, in the quiet repetition of daily connect. Now just think about physical health, if someone goes to the gym for 3 days and then stops, will he see any results? No. In the same way, spiritual understanding also needs: consistence, patience and daily effort.

As a relationship weakens when not nurtured regularly, Similarly, our connection with divine knowledge also fades when efforts are not made constantly. We may then conclude that the Gita is difficult or distant, without realizing that it is our irregular approach that has kept it that way. The depth of its message is not reserved for the intellectual—it is revealed to those who return to it again and again with patience and commitment. Every day 15 minutes of Gita study is more powerful than 2 hours once a week.

What regular study actually does: -

✔ The same verses start revealing deeper meanings.

✔ The teaching start influencing our thought process, not by force, but naturally.

✔ The Gita no longer feels like something we study, it becomes something we experience.

✔ We start seeing situations from a higher, more meaningful perspective.

✔ Most importantly, our connection with the Lord Krishna deepens.

5. Reading Is Not Enough: The Power of Self-Reflection in Gita Study

Many of us read the Bhagavad Gita the same way we read anything other book, moving from one verse to another, trying to understand the meaning, perhaps even appreciating the wisdom… but rarely pausing long enough to ask, “What is this teaching asking me to change within myself?”

And that is where the real gap begins.

Because the Gita is not just meant to be understood—it is meant to be questioned within. Each verse is like a mirror, but if we only look at it briefly and move on, we never truly see ourselves. We may know what Lord Krishna is telling Arjuna, but we don’t pause to see how the same confusion, the same attachments, and the same inner conflicts exist within us.

Without reflection, the Gita remains someone else’s conversation—a dialogue that happened on a battlefield long ago. But with reflection, it becomes our own inner dialogue, happening in the quiet moments of our daily life.

Reflection turns reading into realization, it connects scripture to personal experience and it shifts knowledge from mind to heart.

6. Bhagavad Gita Is Revealed Only by Krishna’s Mercy

Now the most important point is Bhagavad Gita cannot be understood merely by reading or intellectual effort, but it can be understood by Krishna’s Mercy. We should always seek for Lord’s mercy as Krishna Himself declares (BG 10.11) that out of His mercy, He personally removes the darkness of ignorance from the heart of a devotee. This means that without divine grace, the true meaning of the Gita remains hidden, no matter how learned one may be.

The Lord tells Arjuna that basically there is no possibility of understanding the Supreme Truth simply by speculating. One can go on speculating for several millions of years, but if he is not devoted, if he is not a lover of the Supreme Truth, then he will never understand Krishna, or the Supreme Truth. Only by devotional service, Krishna is pleased, and by His mercy we can understand this divine knowledge of Bhagavad Gita .

It is state in (BG 10.10) one should perform some sort of work for Krishna, and that work should be with love. If a devotee is not intelligent enough to make progress on the path of self-realization but is sincere and devoted to the activities of devotional service, the Lord gives him a chance to make progress and ultimately attain to Him. With this we understand that Lord’s mercy destroys the darkness and enlightens our heart with supreme knowledge.

The Right Approach to Understand Bhagavad Gita Easily

We need to understand that Bhagavad Gita’s wisdom does not automatically reveal itself to everyone. Not because it is difficult but because it asks for the right approach. When we read it with: -

✔ Right Spirit,

✔ In Bona Fide Guru Parampara

✔ Guidance from senior devotees

✔ Inner reflections

✔ Consistency

✔ And seek for Lord’s mercy

Then, Gita begins to feel relatable and easy to understand. The teachings of Lord Krishna are not just answers to Arjuna’s questions—they are answers waiting for each one of us, in our own moments of confusion, doubt, and searching.

“The Bhagavad Gita is not difficult to understand…it simply waits for us to be ready to understand it.”
